Recap: Ages of Activism
Sunday's Ages of Activism gathering was a wonderful success, with a room filled with people spanning multiple generations in the cozy setting of Eliza’s House. A representative from each generation shared defining events and personal memories from their era — grounding our discussion in lived experience.
Participants then worked together in an escape-room-style activity simulating an emergency scenario, blending different communication styles to interpret clues and solve problems collaboratively. It was a powerful reminder that when we listen across generations and combine our strengths, we’re better equipped to act together.

Keep the Pressure On
Washington County’s proposed warehouse conversion into an ICE processing and detention center remains unanswered territory. We presented the Commissioners with a list of 20 questions at their February 3 meeting — in the presence of hundreds of concerned residents — and received no response. On February 10, the Commissioners passed a resolution fully supporting DHS, ICE, and law enforcement without discussion or explanation. We followed up with a letter signed by over 180 citizens, urging them to publicly address the remaining unanswered questions and hold a community forum. The only reply so far has stated there are “no details beyond those already clearly stated.”
Most of the remaining questions are straightforward and factual — not speculative — and this issue demands transparency. A national issue has landed on Washington County’s doorstep, and our community deserves answers.
📢Join us at the February 24 Board of County Commissioners meetings at 9 AM and 6 PM and say: WE WANT ANSWERS.

Advocacy – The 287(g) Ban
On February 20, hundreds gathered in Annapolis to mark the passage of the 287(g) ban legislation — a major step forward for immigrant justice in Maryland. As We Are CASA Legal Director Ama Frimpong reminded the crowd, “We are far from finished.” Ending 287(g) is a powerful victory, and it reflects what organized, sustained advocacy can achieve. The work continues as we push to ensure Maryland fully severs harmful ties with ICE.
